Scene One
[Scene
opens with Celeste standing next to Flora's bedroom the door, in shock]
Celeste:
Oh
my God.
Flora:
Aunt
Celeste. I’m so sorry.
Celeste:
How did you find out about that? I thought we had…
Jack:
Umm I
am gonna leave you two to talk. Ok? I’ll see you later.
[Jack leaves Flora's room]
Celeste:
[Sits on Flora’s bed]
I can’t believe this.
Flora:
You
knew. Wow.
Celeste:
I
never in a million years thought that the tape would be leaked. I took care of
it. I did.
Flora:
You
think you took care of it.
Celeste:
I
feel powerless. I can’t hide this from your mother. I can’t do anything to
protect her.
Flora:
You’ll
have to talk to her.
[Celeste looks at Flora and then looks down]
I never knew
mom was that wild back then.
Celeste:
It
wasn’t a mistake. She was taped.
Flora:
Really?
So it wasn’t a sex tape? Do you know who recorded her?
Celeste:
[Sighs]
No. We gave up looking for the person that did it. So we just decided
to take care of it. It seems the person is
still around, after all these years. What
am I going to do?
Scene Two
[Scene
opens at Gordon’s Coffee Shop. Kate walks in and heads to the counter. Gordon is at the counter, a waitress is next to him]
Kate:
Hi Gordon.
Gordon:
Hey.
Kate:
Can
we talk?
Gordon:
Sure. Follow me.
[Both Kate and Gordon walk into Gordon’s office]
Is everything
okay?
Kate:
[Sighs]
He’s having an affair.
Gordon:
Roger?
Kate:
Yes,
Roger. He’s having an affair.
Gordon:
Did
he tell you that? Did you catch him in bed with another woman?
Kate:
No.
But…
Gordon:
There you go again jumping to conclusions.
Kate:
He
won’t sleep with me. He won’t touch me. He’s so rude and irritated…
Gordon:
Roger was never a nice person, especially after his success. That’s who he is.
Kate:
Sometimes I wish I had never married him. I should have married you. I should
have had your children.
Gordon:
Don’t say that. You have a beautiful family. Your kids are a blessing.
[Holds Kate’s hand]
I know someone you could talk to.
A good therapist.
Kate:
I
don’t need a therapist Gordon! If I needed one I wouldn’t be here. I need you.
Gordon:
What do you want me to do? You can’t keep coming here Kate. I have a business
to run. People will start talking. I
don’t want Roger on my back, ok?
Kate:
I
just confessed my love for you.
Gordon:
You
are confused. You are not thinking straight. Go home, take a shower and talk to
your husband. Please listen to me. If
you care about me you’d try.
[Touches Kate’s shoulder]
Scene Three
[Scene
opens with Jack entering his house. Josh sits on the couch]
Josh:
I’ve
been waiting for you.
Jack:
You’re always waiting for people. Don’t you have things to do?
Josh:
We
still haven’t talked about that girl.
Jack:
Her
name is Flora. I really like her and I don’t care about what you think about
her.
Josh:
Do
you know her? Her history? Her background?
Jack:
What?!
Josh:
You
know how dad feels about this, right?
Jack:
I do
not. Enlighten me, please.
[Speaks sarcastically]
Josh:
[Sighs]
Look, I don’t want to be cut off. I love this house. I love my credit
cards and everything else that comes with being Roger Roosevelt’s
son. I am not going to let you ruin that for me.
Jack:
Have
you forgotten that dad is a rags-to-riches story. He wasn’t born rich. He
got lucky. Anyways, what makes you his most valued
side-kick? I’m sorry; I didn’t get the memo at birth.
Josh:
It’s
not about money, I just happen to know my father very well.
Jack:
He’s
my father too. The sooner you realize that he’s not all yours, the more
intelligent you’ll be.
Josh:
You
leave me with no choice. I can’t keep secrets from him. I don’t lie to him.
[Walks away]
Jack:
It's none of your business Josh! Stay out of it!
Scene Four
[Scene
opens with Kate entering her bedroom. Roger is seated on a chair next to their
bed]
Roger:
Dinner was great. Thanks for that.
Kate: Good
evening Roger.
[Walks towards the dressing room door and opens it]
Roger:
You
were with him, right?
Kate:
[Stops. Begins to breathe heavily]
With who?
Roger:
I am
not stupid Kate. I know that you’ve been seeing him.
Kate:
Seeing him? What are you talking about?
Roger:
Are
you having sex?
Kate:
[Turns to look at Roger]
You think I am cheating on you?
Roger:
I
know.
Kate:
I am not cheating on you Roger.
Roger:
Then
what were you doing at his coffee shop?
Kate:
So
now you have people following me? You don’t trust me?
Roger:
Surprise, surprise.
[Speaks sarcastically]
I know you still love him.
Kate:
Is
that why you won’t have sex with me?
[Turns to face Roger]
Roger:
[Laughs]
Maybe? I don’t want second hand goods. Nobody does.
Kate:
I don’t
appreciate you insulting me like that. I am the mother of your children!
Roger:
It’s
not an insult, it’s the truth.
Kate:
So what do you do, huh? How do you
relieve yourself? I mean, a man has needs, right? And
I’m pretty sure that little man of yours needs more than just a hand-job to stay flaccid these
days.
Roger:
[Laughs]
I’m a good man.
Kate:
I
hope so. I really do because if you’re not, I am going to slap you with a
divorce settlement that’s going to make you wish you had
never met me.
Roger:
[Laughs]
Money. You’re talking about money. What is money?
[Walks out of the
room laughing]
Scene Five
[Scene
opens with Julia entering the house after taking a walk. Celeste walks down the
stairs, just in time]
Celeste:
Oh
great, you’re home.
Julia:
Is
everything alright? Is Flora okay?
Celeste:
Oh
she’s fine. Come, come, we need to talk.
[They both walk into the sitting area and
take a seat]
Julia:
What
is it?
Celeste:
You
are not going to believe this.
[Sighs]
I thought it was gone. I did my best to
cover it up. I still haven’t figured out how
this could’ve happened.
Julia:
What
are you talking about?
Celeste:
[Looks into Julia’s eyes]
The tape honey. It was leaked, again.
Julia:
The
tape?
[Covers her eyes]
The tape of me and…
Celeste:
Yes. I am so sorry. I know this is a terrible time. The worst.
Julia:
Who
knows?
[Holds Celeste’s hand]
Celeste:
[Nods]
Good question. The tape was played at Flora’s school during their annual prom. That’s
the reason why she didn’t come home last
night. Well, part of the reason.
Julia:
Damnit! We have to find whoever did this. They can’t keep doing this to me.
Celeste:
We
have done all we could, remember?
Julia:
We
need to try again!
Celeste:
Flora’s friend told me that she suspected one of the mean girls from the
school…
Julia:
No,
I don’t think a kid could have done that. It’s someone we know, someone that
knew.
Celeste:
I’m clueless. I really am.
Julia:
Kwame!
Celeste:
Kwame? Flora’s father?
[Stands up with a confused face]
You think Kwame did
this? Is he even in town?
Julia:
He
must be. He must’ve found out, found her. This is a sign.
Celeste:
I
don’t follow Julia. Why would he want to embarrass himself like this? So basically he hired someone to tape you guys having sex. Wow.
Julia:
[Sighs]
There’s something that I didn’t tell you about Kwame, something you
should know.
Celeste:
There’s
something I should know? You have a secret? Wow. After all we’ve been through.
Julia:
Oh
please, just shut up and listen.
Celeste:
[Rolls her eyes]
Okay, what is it?
[Julia
looks deep into Celeste’s eyes]
