#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 73

 HOT ON TV

Queens (USA, Syndicated) starring Eve J. Cooper a.k.a. Eve (Brianna), Brandy Norwood a.k.a. Brandy (Naomi), Naturi Naughton (Jill), and Nadine Velazquez (Valeria) is a new and compelling drama series about the lives of a group of has-been female rappers that get another life-changing opportunity to bounce back onto the music industry scene beginning with a collaborative performance at a major awards ceremony with a trendier younger rapper.

The portrayals by the actresses mentioned above are pretty darn good such that I continuously get lost in the moment, forgetting that it's all fictional. #PrettyDarnGood

I am interested to find out how the story will pan out (of course), though I don't foresee a prolonged stay for the show on our schedules. #ICouldBeWrong

American Horror Stories (USA, FX on Hulu) is a fresh and somewhat addictive horror anthology series that made for worthwhile Halloween season binge-watching sessions this year.

Based on American Horror Story (USA, FX), this series mesmerizes viewers with episodes of up to an hour in length, each of horror-themed stories that are generally intriguing.

The production (technical) was/seemed/looked flawless. I do not doubt that Hollywood's awards season (Emmys, Globes, and other critics) will dare pass on mentioning the series.

Otherwise, it's one of those to watch when nothing else is on.

Yep, it belongs in that pile.

The re-imagining of Chucky (USA, Syndicated) has to be one of the highlights of this (10th) Enzer's World (E.W.) Year

This new series succeeds at #totally engrossing viewers with an enchanting story-line fronted by Zackary Arthur as Jake Wheeler, a teenager who purchases a doll (Chucky, voiced by Brad Dourif) that comes to life and prompts him to homicidal acts, in a very made-for-television and entertaining way. #NotOverlyCreepy

Never in a million years would I have expected a re-imagination of Chucky on television.

But hey...it happened.

Thank goodness the show is unco memorable, at least.

Tamron Hall (USA, Syndicated) is a talk show that is of interest, these days. The series, like any other daytime talk show, features celebrity guests and relevant conversations that are a perfect fit for daytime television. #TotallyRefreshing

HOTTER:

Though You (USA, Netflix)'s third season began on a low note (episode 1), the rest of the season did justice to writing for television,  once again.

Luckily, I watched the first episode until the end, because if I hadn't, I would've missed out on another one of Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley)'s 'epic' moments in the history of the show's three seasons. #LOL

I am not sure if I should spoil it for those that haven't watched the latest season yet or not...

How is it even possible that a series can be that captivating for three whole consecutive seasons?

Only time will tell if the team behind the show will lose its vigor.

#ICouldGoOnAllDay #ISwear

The final season of Dear White People (USA, Netflix) took an unexpected turn (well, the word was out about this new direction beforehand) by turning the piquing series into a perfectly mellow musical. The futuristic primal setting, the highlights of the character's final year of college, the writers' sensitivity to current social issues, and the selection of 90's hit songs (for the musical aspect) all made for a distinctive final season, only (possibly) comparable to the unforgettable first season.

#HatsOffToYou #Totally

American Horror Story returned for its tenth season (Double Feature) in July with a so-so story (split into two).

I have come to expect that (so-so seasons) from the writers of the show, who out of ten seasons, have only gotten it #totally right with 1984 and Coven. #MaybeNextTime

The GMA Dove Awards 2021 (USA, TBN) ceremony took place in Nashville (once again) and featured a plethora of Christian music artists from diverse sets of Christian music sub-genres. The telecast was close to spectacular, without straying from its biblical mandate, and highlighted Christian artists' superior live performance abilities. #TotallyUplifted

WEB TV:

The 2020 and 2021 Mr. Gay World (South Africa, YouTube) contests were held virtually this past October.

Several candidates (they call them delegates) competed for both titles in a well-produced online comp that should become a highlight on the LGBTI+ calendar, alongside or second to Global Pride Events. #CheckItOutSometime

The Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) Television Awards 2021 (USA, YouTube) also took place virtually, providing not only an entertaining production but an impressive crop of winners.

I am #totally looking forward to the next ceremony.

The Lady Gaga celebrates Love For Sale (USA, Online) event is also something to check out on the inter-webs soon, before its old news, #LOL

Uhmm, I haven't read or noticed anything about the upcoming 20th season of American Idol (USA, Syndicated), but I'm sure there's something special 'brewing' in those production rooms, (well, hopefully).

#EnzerLovesIdol

E.W. GLOBAL:

The only thing easy to watch at the moment is the third season of Love Island (Australia, Nine Network).

Yep, they finally turned me into an avid fan too, and I don't think that's ever gonna change.

I don't know why the show is so refreshingly entertaining when all that the producers did was use the same original (Love Island) format with the only difference being the Australian cast.

Mmm, it must be the Australian cast then.

 #Shrugs

THROWBACK:

Young & Hungry (USA), starring Emily Osment as Gabi, a young chef that falls for her rich, successful, and young eligible bachelor boss, is a sitcom worth binge-watching soon.

All episodes of the five seasons are equally good, contain great humor, and a good-looking young cast.

The show would make for a great viewing option this holiday season.

#TotallyBingeworthy

DAILY INSPIRATION

People usually associate a sense of unbounded presence with epiphanies in life – being present at a birthing or a death. People lose themselves in romantic interludes, nature, or the presence of heart-wrenching beauty. Those fleeting moments resonate with the intense experience of presence. Yet peak experiences are only portals to our true nature – which is already occurring completely on its own.

What is known as passionate presence is merely feeling this immaculate consciousness here and now, realizing or being fully cognizant of the ordinary miracle of just being. Such needs no attainment since it is already occurring. It requires no special circumstances, no life epiphanies, and no meritorious preparations. It is fully present in each moment of our lives. It stays fresh and innocent despite our sorrows, regrets, and whatever damage or failures we feel we have sustained.

You may say, 'This makes absolute sense, but how do we get there?'

The irony is that in the moment of saying, 'This makes sense...' this is awakened awareness itself.

It is your awakened awareness that recognizes that true insight is best metabolized fresh.

SPEAK OUT

#QUOTES:

"Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring and integrity, they think of you." – H. JACKSON BROWN, JR.

"Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon." - M. FORSTER

"When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion." - ETHIOPIAN PROVERB

"Change can either challenge or threaten us. Your beliefs pave your way to success or block you." - MARSHA SINETAR

"Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements." - NAPOLEON HILL

"And now let us welcome the New Year, full of things that have never been." - RAINER MARIA RILKE

"To live at this time is an inestimable privilege, and a sacred obligation devolves upon you to make the right use of your opportunities." - GRENVILLE KLEISER

"I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.." - JB PRIESTLY

"Adventure isn't hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain. Adventure is an attitude that we must apply to the day-to-day obstacles of life – facing new challenges, seizing new opportunities, testing our resources against the unknown and in the process, discovering our own unique potential." - JOHN AMATT

"You are the possessor of a great and wonderful power. This power, when properly applied, will bring confidence instead of timidity, calmness instead of confusion, poise instead of restlessness, and peace of mind in place of heartache. What is your greatest power? The power to choose." - J. MARTIN KOHE

MUSIC SPOT

I honestly can't name a single by Jason Derulo that isn't a chart-topper, a catchy tune, and/or a track on some random pop playlist.

No other popular singer can effortlessly make auto-tune sound so marketably artless without losing that pop x-factor and reducing the sum of the Benjamins earned.

He is...an unstoppable talent. #NowTheLadiesCanSwoon

FLICK PICK

The After (USA) Film Series has taken over the world!

The first two releases of the series (After; After We Collided) presented a story never seen on-screen before (from my recollections) with the third release titled After We Fell, taking the story to a whole new (unexpected) level.

With an outstanding cast including, Josephine Langford (Tessa) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (Hardin), fit for the story, it's unbelievable how the amateur Wattpad writer (originator) and the film adopters, all got it right.

The cliffhangers can be a bit too much, but if the adopters continue churning out movies annually - they're forgiven.

With that mentioned, the release of the next film (probably After Ever Happy) is an event to mark on my calendar. #YouShouldToo

*After We Collided is E.W. Global's Favorite Movie for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

The Home Alone (USA) film series is another set of timeless motion picture releases.

No holiday season is complete without a watch party featuring all of the Home Alone kids; the 2021 season is no exception.

The first three releases are the stand-outs and should be on your viewing priority list this Christmas.

#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 72

HOT ON TV

Created by Marc CherryParamount Plus’ Why Women Kill (USA) introduces us to a set of married women from different walks of life that allow their emotions, desires, lusts, and imaginations to bring out the worst (and sometimes the best) in them.

Okay…,

Still, I feel like the opening description above is not fully convincing, and you’re probably still wondering why it’s worth it.

Well, believing that you’ve given Marc Cherry credit for his other titles, namely Desperate Housewives (USA) and Lifetime’s Devious Maids (USA), this new addition is assuredly well developed and arguably one for the television history books (too).

The first season focused on infidelity and how that incites women to seek revenge, through murder, with a plot that not only dramatizes the subject but also cleverly incorporates humor.

Unexpectedly, the second season took a different angle, focusing on a woman’s quest for notoriety in her community through a social club. The leads, Alma played by Allison Tolman and her nemesis, Rita played by Lana Parrilla, turned a tiff into a murder case – all making for unmissable television.

It might take a while before a better series is commissioned. #TotallyObsessed

*Why Women Kill is Enzer’s World (E.W.)’s Outstanding Fictional Television Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

Another one for the television history books is the groundbreaking FX series simply titled, Pose (USA).

As some may already know, the show follows a group of LGBTI+ New Yorkers living through the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s which greatly affected the Queer Community in their city.

Well, the HIV/AIDS epidemic isn’t really central to the plot.

The series mainly focuses on the trans community (transgender, transexual, etc.), by presenting a more normalized scenario, with the ball culture scenes highlighted throughout.

Sadly the show’s current and third season released a few months ago is the last one in the series.

*Pose is E.W. Queer’s Outstanding Fictional Television Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

Now in its fourth season, Netflix’s Elite (Spain) caught my full attention a few months ago. The story revolves around a group of students at a posh high school where the happenings are nowhere close to ordinary. The series was one of those I usually passed on, but after watching the latest and fourth season, I am certain that this teen drama is #totally HOT ON TV.

*Elite is E.W.’s Outstanding Fictional Drama Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021, and E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Fictional Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

*Netflix (USA) is E.W.’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform for Fictional Series, E.W. Steam’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform, E.W. Queer’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform – all for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

HOTTER:

The 2021
Brits (UK) went live in May to honor the best of British pop music and other international chart-toppers of the year. The ceremony doubled as a COVID-19 experiment in order to realize the realistic risks of gathering amid the pandemic at that particular time of the year. #Great

I am just glad the show was not prerecorded.

Anyways, I got to live-tweet during much of the ceremony.

To find all of the tweets (and probably watch/re-watch along) type in...

#EWLiveTweet #BRITs

...into your Twitter Search Bar and all of the tweets will appear on your screen.

The telecast was passable but quite refreshing, proving, once again, that such a show has to be a live event (and not a prerecorded Zoom-cast). #LOL

Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots (USA) on OWN wrapped up a few weeks ago with a murder-ridden series finale, a pre-finale special, and a post-finale cast reunion.

What a great salute it was to the creative genius that is Tyler Perry and Madam Oprah Winfrey who are both credited numerous times for conceiving the show.

Please ask me in a few years, if a show comparable to The Haves and the Have Nots will be on the air..., #IHighlyDoubtIt

Did you know that fans of NBC’s Good Girls (USA) rallied for the show to be saved/renewed via some of the E.W. Recognitions Twitter posts, sent out during the 9th E.W. Recognitions Period?

I was #totally caught off-guard because I wasn’t aware (initially) that petitions were doing the rounds… #LOL

But anyways...

Multiple Twitter accounts bearing the show’s name and branding flooded E.W.’s Twitter page trying to petition against the show’s cancellation after a four season-long run on NBC. Some users even claimed that NBC just hated WOMEN.

Well, I always enjoyed watching Good Girls (still do), but I’ve kinda gotten used to these surprise cancellations of fan favorites. However, some streaming platform out there (Peacock (USA) perhaps?) might just consider picking up the series for a continuation (especially if fans continue rallying), just like what happened with A.P. Bio (USA, Peacock). #FingersCrossedForTheDieHardFans

*Good Girls is E.W.’s Outstanding Fictional Dramedy Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021, and E.W.’s Outstanding Fictional Crime Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

*NBC (USA) is E.W.’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform for Televised Events for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

CBS (USA) originals Love Island (USA) and Big Brother (USA) premiered their latest seasons with casts comprised of at least fifty percent of individuals belonging to U.S. racial minority groups (as per their updated policy on diversity).

I am #totally interested in finding out how that is going to influence the final results, and if that math will correct the previously identified distortion.

*Love Island is E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Reality Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

*CBS is E.W.’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform for Televised Events for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

New seasons of the Netflix series, Dear White People (USA) and You (USA) will be streaming soon.

Dear White People will close with its fourth season that will reportedly focus on two of the leads Lionel (played by DeRon Horton) and Samantha (played by Logan Browning). #Expectant

You’s highly anticipated third season will take viewers on another one of Joe (played by Penn Badgley)’s journeys with his newly formed family and a set of new characters for him to stalk, I guess.

*You is E.W.’s Favorite Off-The-Air Fictional Show for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

What’s Up With The Manatsas: Selmor and Tendai
(Zimbabwe, Youtube) is a new web reality series.

The series follows the life of musicians Selmor Mtukudzi and her hubby Tendai Manatsa as they raise their three adorable kids and work on completing their dream home, all while striving to maximize their careers in entertainment amidst the constraints imposed as a result of  the COVID-19 outbreak.

A glimpse into the life of this young power couple is more than I had bargained. But, hey, who’s complaining?

A.I. UPDATE:

I was right!

Chayce Beckham won the nineteenth/fourth season of American Idol (USA), as predicted.

The season finale was one of the best since the show’s inception, and a great lead in to the historic twentieth season, which has already set tongues wagging.

I cannot wait to find out what Idol has in store, next.

#EnzerLovesIdol

E.W. GLOBAL:

Two reality singing competitions returned to our small screens a few months ago, and you better believe that I paid close attention to both.

TV returnee Nigerian Idol (Nigeria, Africa Magic) went head-to-head for prime-time viewers against another TV returnee, The Voice (Nigeria) in a battle that is rare on African television with the exception (of course) of competing prime-time South African soapies. #Yep #Aha

Nigerian Idol’s rejigged version premiered the sixth season of the franchise’s production which was way better than the previous editions, but a little deficient in key areas nonetheless.

Similarly, The Voice maintained its passable standard, but lacked attention to detail, as witnessed from comparisons with some of The Voice’s other country-specific versions.

Regardless of the above-stated, both series were watchable.

Moving on...,

A new soapie, titled House of Zwide (South Africa, e) debuted in July, replacing the close to lifeless Rhythm City (South Africa, e) that had ended a somewhat unexpected run a weekend before.
The new soap is set in the world of high fashion. It features a wealthy man and his family, that get caught up in all sorts of secrets from the past resulting in loads of on-screen drama. The whole concept is still new to me so... I’ll give it time. But hopefully, the show is not an imitation of The Bold and the Beautiful (USA).

I was sad to see Rhythm City go off-the-air, but I gotta admit, the show was just no longer the same. I’m not sure if it was the unchanging set designs, the writers’ detachment (seems so), or the ratings (which are impressive).

Love Island (Nigeria) is reportedly in the works with fans of the show (highly) anticipating the debut of an all-Nigerian cast later this year. I am a (huge) fan of the Love Island franchise, and I am (definitely) excited about this development, but I will not let the news get my hopes up. These types of reality shows have disappointed and hurt so many people such that I’ve learned to wait with bated breath... #EnoughSaid

THROWBACK:

Eve
(USA) is a sitcom that aired for three seasons between 2003 and 2006 that featured popular American rapper Eve who played the lead, Shelly a fashion designer who is navigating the dating scene with her friends in the most comedic way imaginable.

I remember when I first watched the show and realized that Eve was playing the lead...

I thought to myself, “A rapper? Doing a sitcom? As a lead?”

...it turns out rappers can be funny too.

DAILY INSPIRATION

Time is a treasure not to be wasted, not to be lived without its morsel of growth.

Minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months weave the fabric of our lives.

Our attitude towards time - whether we value it or squander it or any point between the two, can, like any other attitude, be changed.

The passage from present to past, the conversion of present experience to memory – from which we can learn – is a process that goes on as long as life itself continues.

The saying, ‘And if not now, when?’ has been echoed through the ages by discerning thinkers. William Congreve wrote, ‘Defer not to tomorrow to be wise; tomorrow’s sun to thee may never rise!’

Edward Young advised, ‘Be wise today, ‘tis madness to defer...procrastination is the thief of time.’

How often do we lose sight of the present and its golden opportunities for a rich living? In our early years, we fritter away so much of our time in trivial activities with very little lasting meaning. And as we age, in the rush and hurry of our overly ambitious lives, we seem to have lost our sense of perspective. Endlessly we worry and strive, watching the passage of time with dread, suddenly awakening to the truth that life somehow is passing us.

In truth, all that we possess is ‘now.’

Ibn Ezra said: ‘The past is here no more, the future is not yet; the present lasts an eye-blink – so whence the worry and fret?’

If indeed we live only in the present, we would do well to seek our achievements here and now.

Time is that fleeting moment when the future passes into the past.

Grasp it; embrace it; make it your own.

Usher Raymond IV, popularly known by the mononym Usher, has the requisites that all music lovers seek in a performer.

FLICK PICK

Cruella
(USA) is a prequel to the Disney hit 101 Dalmations film series.

The film introduces us to a young Cruella de Vil (played by Emma Stone), fascinatingly depicting the time before her innocent self was corrupted, to when she eventually built a career in fashion and adopted the name Cruella

Yea, the movie also puts an end to the mystery surrounding her hate for Dalmations, all in just over two hours of drama-filled comedic scenes.

Can the sequel load already?

*Cruella is E.W.’s Favorite Movie for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

The Kissing Booth 3 (USA, Netflix) was such a huge disappointment.

I know that the third release was the last of the series and was supposed to end the story, which it did, but not in the way I expected.

I mean, it just seems like the writers left room for a fourth movie.

Who knows?
