#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 79

HOT ON TV

Based on the novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris, The Other Black Girl (USA, Hulu) is an intriguing thriller that keeps you wanting more. 

A gift that keeps giving, all ten episodes are terrifically written and produced, with a cast that should be the talk of the town.

Sinclair Daniel plays the lead, Nella, an incredible pick and who has (I believe) cemented her place on the scene. 

Another ground-breaking series, released in the latter of 2023 is Fellow Travelers (USA, Showtime). 

Starring Matt Bomer (Hawkins) and Jonathan Bailey (Tim). I bet those two are the draw-cards. 

Anyway, the series, a clever mesh of romance, thriller, history, and drama follows two men who found love in a hopeless place, among other outcomes. 

The show is #BUZZING on many schedules – it should on yours too. 

New comedy gold, Survival of the Thickest (USA, Netflix), is a hilarious take on the vivacious New Yorker’s quest to triumph the city, and all else life throws at her. The show features an amazing supporting cast led by Michelle Buteau as Mavis. 

In case you were holidaying under a rock, CBS (USA) premiered a Big Brother (USA) spinoff for the holidays titled Big Brother Reindeer Games (USA). The game featured past contestants, many of whom are past winners, with some regarded as legends of the game. Nicole Frantzel-Arroyo surprisingly won beating out contestants who I thought she never stood a chance with. Well done mama! 

Peacock (USA) was not too late to the rumble too! Nope, the streamer debuted its Love Island (USA) spinoff, Love Island Games (USA), featuring former contestants...wait for it, from around the world. Yes, a group of former (and probably controversial) islanders made their way to a villa in Fiji to battle it out in themed challenges, as couples, for a couple of Benjamins. I am not hopeful for a second season, though.

The UK version of Big Brother returned to our small screens this past October with a brand new look, cast, and broadcaster in ITV (UK). One thing stood out from this reboot: the production quality is the best, like ever. 

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (USA, Syndicated) deserves a mention. 

I could watch and sing along over and over and over again like the subservient SWIFTIE I am not. #LOL

HOTTER:

The Golden Globe Awards (USA, CBS) recently handed out the 2024 gongs. This year’s telecast was a huge step forward from the last editions, featuring an unexpected guest list and a remarkable winners roster. This show is back with a BANG. Let's just hope it was not all for the sake of being politically correct.

The Primetime Emmy Awards 2023 (USA, Fox), that aired later than expected, also rocked! 

The homage to cult television classics was a highlight. 

And the acceptance speeches were surprisingly good this year. 

Great work on the 75th Anniversary logo too.

Hot off heels of their success with other programs, the Ramaphakela duo is back with another smash show – Miseducation (South Africa, Netflix). 

The show is about ‘that’ notorious child of a top government official (Mbali played by Buntu Petse) who abruptly shifts her destructive spirits to another part of the country, far from all the fame and love lost. #LOL

It's a BANGER. Great escapism. Amazing talent. #ThumbsUp

Also scintillating is the second season of Entangled (South Africa, 1 Magic). 

Following the lives of a group of energetic adults as they navigate a life filled with heartbreak, disappointment, and difficult choices - this one is probably a guilty pleasure for most. 

Fingers crossed for a third season.

- United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda Migration Plan flopped. *WHISPERS*: He must be pissed.

- Another ‘military coup’ happened in West Africa. Gosh, felt like a migraine.

- A Danish royal shuffle happened. #Yawning

- Boeing is back in the news for the wrong reasons.

- Pro-Israel and pro-Palestine forces are at it again in the Middle East.

- Russia is still butchering Ukraine.

#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 73

 HOT ON TV 

Queens (USA, Syndicated) starring Eve J. Cooper a.k.a. Eve (Brianna), Brandy Norwood a.k.a. Brandy (Naomi), Naturi Naughton (Jill), and Nadine Velazquez (Valeria) is a new and compelling drama series about the lives of a group of has-been female rappers that get another life-changing opportunity to bounce back onto the music industry scene beginning with a collaborative performance at a major awards ceremony with a trendier younger rapper. 

The portrayals by the actresses mentioned above are pretty darn good such that I continuously get lost in the moment, forgetting that it's all fictional. #PrettyDarnGood

I am interested to find out how the story will pan out (of course), though I don't foresee a prolonged stay for the show on our schedules. #ICouldBeWrong

American Horror Stories (USA, FX on Hulu) is a fresh and somewhat addictive horror anthology series that made for worthwhile Halloween season binge-watching sessions this year. 

Based on American Horror Story (USA, FX), this series mesmerizes viewers with episodes of up to an hour in length, each of horror-themed stories that are generally intriguing. 

The production (technical) was/seemed/looked flawless. I do not doubt that Hollywood's awards season (Emmys, Globes, and other critics) will dare pass on mentioning the series. 

Otherwise, it's one of those to watch when nothing else is on. 

Yep, it belongs in that pile. 

The re-imagining of Chucky (USA, Syndicated) has to be one of the highlights of this (10th) Enzer's World (E.W.) Year. 

This new series succeeds at #totally engrossing viewers with an enchanting story-line fronted by Zackary Arthur as Jake Wheeler, a teenager who purchases a doll (Chucky, voiced by Brad Dourif) that comes to life and prompts him to homicidal acts, in a very made-for-television and entertaining way. #NotOverlyCreepy

Never in a million years would I have expected a re-imagination of Chucky on television. 

But hey...it happened. 

Thank goodness the show is unco memorable, at least. 

Tamron Hall (USA, Syndicated) is a talk show that is of interest, these days. The series, like any other daytime talk show, features celebrity guests and relevant conversations that are a perfect fit for daytime television. #TotallyRefreshing 

HOTTER:

Though You (USA, Netflix)'s third season began on a low note (episode 1), the rest of the season did justice to writing for television,  once again. 

Luckily, I watched the first episode until the end, because if I hadn't, I would've missed out on another one of Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley)'s 'epic' moments in the history of the show's three seasons. #LOL

I am not sure if I should spoil it for those that haven't watched the latest season yet or not...

How is it even possible that a series can be that captivating for three whole consecutive seasons? 

Only time will tell if the team behind the show will lose its vigor.

The final season of Dear White People (USA, Netflix) took an unexpected turn (well, the word was out about this new direction beforehand) by turning the piquing series into a perfectly mellow musical. The futuristic primal setting, the highlights of the character's final year of college, the writers' sensitivity to current social issues, and the selection of 90's hit songs (for the musical aspect) all made for a distinctive final season, only (possibly) comparable to the unforgettable first season.

American Horror Story returned for its tenth season (Double Feature) in July with a so-so story (split into two). 

I have come to expect that (so-so seasons) from the writers of the show, who out of ten seasons, have only gotten it #totally right with 1984 and Coven. #MaybeNextTime

The GMA Dove Awards 2021 (USA, TBN) ceremony took place in Nashville (once again) and featured a plethora of Christian music artists from diverse sets of Christian music sub-genres. The telecast was close to spectacular, without straying from its biblical mandate, and highlighted Christian artists' superior live performance abilities. #TotallyUplifted

I am #totally looking forward to the next ceremony.

The only thing easy to watch at the moment is the third season of Love Island (Australia, Nine Network). 

Yep, they finally turned me into an avid fan too, and I don't think that's ever gonna change. 

I don't know why the show is so refreshingly entertaining when all that the producers did was use the same original (Love Island) format with the only difference being the Australian cast. 

Mmm, it must be the Australian cast then.

People usually associate a sense of unbounded presence with epiphanies in life – being present at a birthing or a death. The After (USA) Film Series has taken over the world!

The first two releases of the series (After; After We Collided) presented a story never seen on-screen before (from my recollections) with the third release titled After We Fell, taking the story to a whole new (unexpected) level. 

With an outstanding cast including, Josephine Langford (Tessa) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (Hardin), fit for the story, it's unbelievable how the amateur Wattpad writer (originator) and the film adopters, all got it right. 

The cliffhangers can be a bit too much, but if the adopters continue churning out movies annually - they're forgiven. 

With that mentioned, the release of the next film (probably After Ever Happy) is an event to mark on my calendar. #YouShouldToo

*After We Collided is E.W. Global's Favorite Movie for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021. 

The Home Alone (USA) film series is another set of timeless motion picture releases. 

No holiday season is complete without a watch party featuring all of the Home Alone kids; the 2021 season is no exception.

The first three releases are the stand-outs and should be on your viewing priority list this Christmas.
