#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 61

HOT ON TV

Euphoria

I always thought that Girls (HBO), Now Apocalypse (STARZ) and Looking (HBO), were provocative until I switched to HBO for Euphoria
This show is not only explicitly provocative, but could be mildly inappropriate at times. I mean, who comes up with story-lines about screwed up teen addicts (both drugs and sex) and glorifies the same characters? I know HBO is known for being home to some of television’s most provocative scenes, but overly sexualizing teenage characters on-screen for higher ratings is perhaps a no-no.

The series’ plot is a bit bland for my liking especially the lead character’s story-line (Rue, played by Zendaya, of all people). I feel like ‘Hollywood’ is trying so hard to sexualize Zendaya, but that’s a topic of discussion for another day.

The supporting cast is noteworthy and includes actors in roles most would never associate them with. The overall production of the series is passable.

Is it worth your time?

Honestly, yes, but not all of it.

Did you miss Grand Hotel which aired on ABC this past American summer?

Well, I am glad I did not because that was worth my time, indeed. The show’s writers served drama like drama had never been served before.

The entangled lives of the Mendozas, their loyal hotel staff, their disloyal hotel staff, and their nemeses all make for a great time in Miami Beach baby (in the voice of Latin rapper, Pitbull).

I hope some of the show’s fans are not in a state of depression because of the show’s cancellation.

HOTTER:

The highlight of the 2019 Primetime Emmys which aired on FOX this year was the special salute to some of TV’s outstanding shows which got canceled this year.

Game of Thrones (HBO), Modern Family (ABC), The Big Bang Theory (CBS) and Empire (FOX) all received well-deserved farewell tributes from the Emmys and some of the shows’ beloved cast members.

I did, however, feel that Empire deserved a better Emmys send-off. Maybe a short performance by Empire artists?

The sixth and final season of Empire is currently on-the-air, and it’s incredible. The writers smartly excluded Jussie Smollett’s character, Jamal such that it feels like he was never a part of the show or the Lyon family, for that matter. The drama has been heightened proving how wrong the cancellation move was.

Jussie Smollett is Enzer’s World (E.W.) Queer’s Top Celeb for the 7th E.W. Year 2019

How to Get Away with Murder (ABC) also got canceled, and I’m heartbroken about it. I am going to miss the courtroom sessions with Annalise (played by Viola Davis) and her loyal students so much. I felt the greatest pain when I watched one of the current season’s courtroom scenes this past week. #SoSad

Another series which is ‘killing it’, and which has brought the ‘horror genre back’ is the ninth installment of American Horror Story (AHS) on FX cleverly titled 1984. Arguably the best season of AHS, this installment takes serial killing to a whole new level.
Am I allowed to describe killings as amazing?

AHS won the television recognition for Cinematography for the 7th E.W. Year 2019.

Other shows to catch: Riverdale (The CW), Dynasty (The CW), American Housewife (ABC), Mom (CBS), Kids Say the Darndest Things (ABC), This Is Us (NBC).

So the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is not happening this year for some unknown reason. Are they broke? Did someone sue them? What’s up?

I, like many, am sad that I won’t get to watch those beautiful angels strut this December; I mean who cares about what their wearing, lol.

Wait, so the expected superb performances by chart-topping artists are going to be a thing of the past too?

A.I. UPDATE:

What Idol got wrong?

Tori Kelly, Todrick Hall, Amber Riley, Bebe Rexha…and …

This still doesn’t put the Idol formula to shame because so many of their finalists and winners are still topping the charts, breaking records, booking the biggest gigs and acting roles. So basically, they still know what they are talking about when they reject potentially successful singers (like the aforementioned).

One question though: how long before they spot/discover another Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood or even another Adam Lambert

Bebe Rexha’s hit song, Last Hurrah is E.W. Queer’s Song of the (7th E.W.) Year, 2019.

E.W. GLOBAL:

One Night with My Ex (1 Magic) is a show about exes who decide to spend the night in a fancy apartment, to talk about their dissolved relationships and whether they should rekindle their romances or part ways for good or stay friends (if those are the only options).

This amusing out of the ordinary reality series is E.W. Global’s Outstanding Reality Series for the 7th E.W. Year, and has a gorgeous setting.

THROWBACK:

The Fosters, which aired on Freeform for close to six years, and which Jennifer Lopez co-executive produced, had a final season which left no stone unturned. Starring Noah Centineo (Jesus), Cierra Ramirez (Mariana), Maia Mitchell (Callie) and Sherri Saum (Lena) to name a few, the show is the best choice for a binge-watching session.
