#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 72

HOT ON TV

Created by Marc CherryParamount Plus’ Why Women Kill (USA) introduces us to a set of married women from different walks of life that allow their emotions, desires, lusts, and imaginations to bring out the worst (and sometimes the best) in them.

Okay…,

Still, I feel like the opening description above is not fully convincing, and you’re probably still wondering why it’s worth it.

Well, believing that you’ve given Marc Cherry credit for his other titles, namely Desperate Housewives (USA) and Lifetime’s Devious Maids (USA), this new addition is assuredly well developed and arguably one for the television history books (too).

The first season focused on infidelity and how that incites women to seek revenge, through murder, with a plot that not only dramatizes the subject but also cleverly incorporates humor.

Unexpectedly, the second season took a different angle, focusing on a woman’s quest for notoriety in her community through a social club. The leads, Alma played by Allison Tolman and her nemesis, Rita played by Lana Parrilla, turned a tiff into a murder case – all making for unmissable television.

It might take a while before a better series is commissioned. #TotallyObsessed

*Why Women Kill is Enzer’s World (E.W.)’s Outstanding Fictional Television Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

Another one for the television history books is the groundbreaking FX series simply titled, Pose (USA).

As some may already know, the show follows a group of LGBTI+ New Yorkers living through the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s which greatly affected the Queer Community in their city.

Well, the HIV/AIDS epidemic isn’t really central to the plot.

The series mainly focuses on the trans community (transgender, transexual, etc.), by presenting a more normalized scenario, with the ball culture scenes highlighted throughout.

Sadly the show’s current and third season released a few months ago is the last one in the series.

*Pose is E.W. Queer’s Outstanding Fictional Television Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

Now in its fourth season, Netflix’s Elite (Spain) caught my full attention a few months ago. The story revolves around a group of students at a posh high school where the happenings are nowhere close to ordinary. The series was one of those I usually passed on, but after watching the latest and fourth season, I am certain that this teen drama is #totally HOT ON TV.

*Elite is E.W.’s Outstanding Fictional Drama Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021, and E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Fictional Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

*Netflix (USA) is E.W.’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform for Fictional Series, E.W. Steam’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform, E.W. Queer’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform – all for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

HOTTER:

The 2021
Brits (UK) went live in May to honor the best of British pop music and other international chart-toppers of the year. The ceremony doubled as a COVID-19 experiment in order to realize the realistic risks of gathering amid the pandemic at that particular time of the year. #Great

I am just glad the show was not prerecorded.

Anyways, I got to live-tweet during much of the ceremony.

To find all of the tweets (and probably watch/re-watch along) type in...

#EWLiveTweet #BRITs

...into your Twitter Search Bar and all of the tweets will appear on your screen.

The telecast was passable but quite refreshing, proving, once again, that such a show has to be a live event (and not a prerecorded Zoom-cast). #LOL

Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots (USA) on OWN wrapped up a few weeks ago with a murder-ridden series finale, a pre-finale special, and a post-finale cast reunion.

What a great salute it was to the creative genius that is Tyler Perry and Madam Oprah Winfrey who are both credited numerous times for conceiving the show.

Please ask me in a few years, if a show comparable to The Haves and the Have Nots will be on the air..., #IHighlyDoubtIt

Did you know that fans of NBC’s Good Girls (USA) rallied for the show to be saved/renewed via some of the E.W. Recognitions Twitter posts, sent out during the 9th E.W. Recognitions Period?

I was #totally caught off-guard because I wasn’t aware (initially) that petitions were doing the rounds… #LOL

But anyways...

Multiple Twitter accounts bearing the show’s name and branding flooded E.W.’s Twitter page trying to petition against the show’s cancellation after a four season-long run on NBC. Some users even claimed that NBC just hated WOMEN.

Well, I always enjoyed watching Good Girls (still do), but I’ve kinda gotten used to these surprise cancellations of fan favorites. However, some streaming platform out there (Peacock (USA) perhaps?) might just consider picking up the series for a continuation (especially if fans continue rallying), just like what happened with A.P. Bio (USA, Peacock). #FingersCrossedForTheDieHardFans

*Good Girls is E.W.’s Outstanding Fictional Dramedy Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021, and E.W.’s Outstanding Fictional Crime Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

*NBC (USA) is E.W.’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform for Televised Events for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

CBS (USA) originals Love Island (USA) and Big Brother (USA) premiered their latest seasons with casts comprised of at least fifty percent of individuals belonging to U.S. racial minority groups (as per their updated policy on diversity).

I am #totally interested in finding out how that is going to influence the final results, and if that math will correct the previously identified distortion.

*Love Island is E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Reality Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

*CBS is E.W.’s Best TV Channel/Network/Station/Platform for Televised Events for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

New seasons of the Netflix series, Dear White People (USA) and You (USA) will be streaming soon.

Dear White People will close with its fourth season that will reportedly focus on two of the leads Lionel (played by DeRon Horton) and Samantha (played by Logan Browning). #Expectant

You’s highly anticipated third season will take viewers on another one of Joe (played by Penn Badgley)’s journeys with his newly formed family and a set of new characters for him to stalk, I guess.

*You is E.W.’s Favorite Off-The-Air Fictional Show for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

What’s Up With The Manatsas: Selmor and Tendai
(Zimbabwe, Youtube) is a new web reality series.

The series follows the life of musicians Selmor Mtukudzi and her hubby Tendai Manatsa as they raise their three adorable kids and work on completing their dream home, all while striving to maximize their careers in entertainment amidst the constraints imposed as a result of  the COVID-19 outbreak.

A glimpse into the life of this young power couple is more than I had bargained. But, hey, who’s complaining?

A.I. UPDATE:

I was right!

Chayce Beckham won the nineteenth/fourth season of American Idol (USA), as predicted.

The season finale was one of the best since the show’s inception, and a great lead in to the historic twentieth season, which has already set tongues wagging.

I cannot wait to find out what Idol has in store, next.

#EnzerLovesIdol

E.W. GLOBAL:

Two reality singing competitions returned to our small screens a few months ago, and you better believe that I paid close attention to both.

TV returnee Nigerian Idol (Nigeria, Africa Magic) went head-to-head for prime-time viewers against another TV returnee, The Voice (Nigeria) in a battle that is rare on African television with the exception (of course) of competing prime-time South African soapies. #Yep #Aha

Nigerian Idol’s rejigged version premiered the sixth season of the franchise’s production which was way better than the previous editions, but a little deficient in key areas nonetheless.

Similarly, The Voice maintained its passable standard, but lacked attention to detail, as witnessed from comparisons with some of The Voice’s other country-specific versions.

Regardless of the above-stated, both series were watchable.

Moving on...,

A new soapie, titled House of Zwide (South Africa, e) debuted in July, replacing the close to lifeless Rhythm City (South Africa, e) that had ended a somewhat unexpected run a weekend before.
The new soap is set in the world of high fashion. It features a wealthy man and his family, that get caught up in all sorts of secrets from the past resulting in loads of on-screen drama. The whole concept is still new to me so... I’ll give it time. But hopefully, the show is not an imitation of The Bold and the Beautiful (USA).

I was sad to see Rhythm City go off-the-air, but I gotta admit, the show was just no longer the same. I’m not sure if it was the unchanging set designs, the writers’ detachment (seems so), or the ratings (which are impressive).

#Sighs

Love Island (Nigeria) is reportedly in the works with fans of the show (highly) anticipating the debut of an all-Nigerian cast later this year. I am a (huge) fan of the Love Island franchise, and I am (definitely) excited about this development, but I will not let the news get my hopes up. These types of reality shows have disappointed and hurt so many people such that I’ve learned to wait with bated breath... #EnoughSaid

*Creamerie (New Zealand, TVNZ) is E.W. Global’s Outstanding Fictional Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

*Thunder In My Heart (Sweden, Viaplay) is E.W. Global Plus’ Outstanding Fictional Series for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

THROWBACK:

Eve
(USA) is a sitcom that aired for three seasons between 2003 and 2006 that featured popular American rapper Eve who played the lead, Shelly a fashion designer who is navigating the dating scene with her friends in the most comedic way imaginable.

I remember when I first watched the show and realized that Eve was playing the lead...

I thought to myself, “A rapper? Doing a sitcom? As a lead?”

...it turns out rappers can be funny too.

‘Coz all three seasons are #TotallyBingeworthy

DAILY INSPIRATION

Time is a treasure not to be wasted, not to be lived without its morsel of growth.

Minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months weave the fabric of our lives.

Our attitude towards time - whether we value it or squander it or any point between the two, can, like any other attitude, be changed.

The passage from present to past, the conversion of present experience to memory – from which we can learn – is a process that goes on as long as life itself continues.

The saying, ‘And if not now, when?’ has been echoed through the ages by discerning thinkers. William Congreve wrote, ‘Defer not to tomorrow to be wise; tomorrow’s sun to thee may never rise!’

Edward Young advised, ‘Be wise today, ‘tis madness to defer...procrastination is the thief of time.’

How often do we lose sight of the present and its golden opportunities for a rich living? In our early years, we fritter away so much of our time in trivial activities with very little lasting meaning. And as we age, in the rush and hurry of our overly ambitious lives, we seem to have lost our sense of perspective. Endlessly we worry and strive, watching the passage of time with dread, suddenly awakening to the truth that life somehow is passing us.

In truth, all that we possess is ‘now.’

Ibn Ezra said: ‘The past is here no more, the future is not yet; the present lasts an eye-blink – so whence the worry and fret?’

If indeed we live only in the present, we would do well to seek our achievements here and now.

Time is that fleeting moment when the future passes into the past.

Grasp it; embrace it; make it your own.

FLICK PICK

Cruella
(USA) is a prequel to the Disney hit 101 Dalmations film series.

The film introduces us to a young Cruella de Vil (played by Emma Stone), fascinatingly depicting the time before her innocent self was corrupted, to when she eventually built a career in fashion and adopted the name Cruella

Yea, the movie also puts an end to the mystery surrounding her hate for Dalmations, all in just over two hours of drama-filled comedic scenes.

Can the sequel load already?

*Cruella is E.W.’s Favorite Movie for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

The Kissing Booth 3 (USA, Netflix) was such a huge disappointment.

I know that the third release was the last of the series and was supposed to end the story, which it did, but not in the way I expected.

I mean, it just seems like the writers left room for a fourth movie.

Who knows?
