#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 57

HOT ON TV

Introducing Desperate Housewives 2.0!

No, seriously, our HOT ON TV feature for this edition of #TheRoundUp should be easily defined as a replica of the hit ABC series Desperate Housewives. Needless to say, Good Girls on NBC is not promising, it’s a dramatic phenom.

The second season roped me into the world of Beth, Ruby, and Annie within minutes. The storylines are, frankly a unique offering which has ended NBC’s (and most of TV’s) ‘churn-out-mediocrity’ phase.

The lead actresses (Christina Hendricks, Retta & Mae Whitman) gel well with the rest of the cast (without creating any imbalances) and overlooking the directing team is excruciating.

Another primetime series which I am gushing over is one of CBS’s new sitcoms, Fam. Fam follows an interracial couple and their next of kin, as they cope with the challenges directed at their non-volatile relationships. Nina Dobrev (multiple Enzer’s WorldE.W.Recognitions Nominee) and Tone Bell, play the roles of Clem and Nick respectively, the match made in television heaven, whose relationship by-products will leave many in stitches. #RestAssured

Boomerang, a new BET series revolving around a group of highly driven young adults, is arguably the best series (production wise) to ever air on BET to date. The series is provocative, and intelligently written and delivered.

Oh, there’s more!

Will & Grace recently concluded its tenth season on
NBC. I was not a fan when the series made a comeback, but I am now. The humor (especially) is the differential aspect. And the mouths belonging to the thespians who are responsible for making us all laugh-out-loud (Eric McCormack as Will, Debra Messing as Grace, Sean Hayes as Jack, Megan Mullally as Karen), are indisputably excellent at doing so.

Shrill on Hulu is an interesting series about a
contently overweight woman (Annie played by Aidy Bryant) who generally ‘goes with the flow’ and humbly accepts what is afforded to her by the universe. I like the show because it is relatable and relaxing at the same time, #LOL.

…And now, the TV disaster of note...A.P. Bio on NBC
I know the show might get a third season, but I can’t help but ask myself what the NBC bosses were thinking when they gave the idea a heads up. I’m sorry but the series is lame and the lead actor, Glenn Howerton as Jack, is really good at ensuring that that lameness is evident throughout. #ThanksButIllPass

HOTTER:

The ACM Awards (CBS), The NAACP Image Awards (TV One) and The iHeart Radio Music Awards (FOX) were all trending these past couple of weeks.

The ACMs were hosted by our favorite country mama, Reba McEntire and succeeded at giving viewers a glittery time. The Image Awards were a mellow affair with host Anthony Anderson, who I believe should now pass on the baton. And finally, The iHeart Radio Music Awards, hosted by T-Pain, changed the game by introducing a different style or format to the televised awards scene. #ABallOfFun

Other shows to catch: Empire on FOX, Dynasty on The CW, Riverdale on The CW, Arrested Development on Netflix.

WEB TV:

The New 30, E.W.’s Outstanding Web Series for the 6th E.W. Year, is an uncommon take on the middle-aged homosexual male. Authentically written, this series is truly rewarding to the Web TV Fanatic.

A.I. UPDATE:

The second season of American Idol (A.I.) on ABC is in full swing. I’ve enjoyed all the events so far; its only high expectations henceforth.

I’ve already selected a potential winner (prediction).

The crop of contestants is to be reckoned with nonetheless.

E.W. GLOBAL:

E.W. Global’s Outstanding Television Series for the 6th E.W. Year, Shuga on MTV Base, is a captivating fictional series about how different sets of African communities mainly consisting of high-school-going teens grapple with the reality that is HIV/AIDS. It’s acceptable edutainment which is worth-the-watch.

Retro themed BBC Two series, White Gold ticks all of the boxes. The fascinating characters are refreshingly amusing and the producers got it right with both the episode and series length. Bravo!

THROWBACK:

90210, which first aired back in 2008 on The CW is definitely binge-worthy!

The series which introduced many viewers to the most entitled West Beverly Hills pack of teens facing outrageous obstacles and maturely overcoming them is by far one of the most dramatic teen series of the 2000s.

Sadly, I don’t foresee a revival.

SPEAK OUT

#Celebs

Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman, and co. is the reason why many of those who were rejected by or dropped out of Ivy League schools have the last laugh. The aforementioned are facing fraud charges for bribing school heads, guaranteeing their children a spot at one of America’s best universities.

Am I surprised? Well, the wise man once said ‘that money and power corrupt’, so…

Jussie Smollett is a free man after charges laid against him for falsely filing a police report were dropped a few weeks ago. I really do not know what to believe even though it is difficult to believe that a gay African-American would lie about a hate crime - unless they were mentally disturbed.

As for R. Kelly, well we will never really know what goes on behind Hollywood scenes. I write this once again, a society which encourages women and any other group of vulnerable people to speak out must be promoted and safeguarded because when victims stay silent, their case weakens.
