#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 70

HOT ON TV

Call Your Mother
(USA) is a new sitcom about a clingy/concerned mother (or a mom just being a mum) who decides to move from Iowa to L.A. (where her two adult kids are based) to be closer to them after multiple failed attempts at contacting them.

That might seem like a dumb plot-line at first, but I can assure you that it’s quite an enjoyable series when you do decide to give it a try.

The characters are #totally new to me. There’s the clingy/concerned mother (who’s just being a mom/mum), the mother’s obsequious friend, the mother's Australian landlord (who's also a love interest), the two teen-lookalike adult kids (a boy and a girl), the girl’s over-the-top gay roomie, and the boy’s well-dressed (expensive wear, like at all times) girlfriend who is soooo L.A. #Winks

Moving on…

After I blogged about a popular quiz show adaptation of the Weakest Link (USA) in a previous #TheRoundUp edition, a couple of other new quiz shows showing this season were brought to my attention.

And, yes, I am enjoying them too. #Thanks

Well, two in particular.

First up is People Puzzler (USA) on Game Show Network. The show pits three contestants against each other as they try to solve several word puzzles. The puzzles are fairly easy making it a great game to play along to from home. And Leah Remini as the hostess is the cherry on top.

And then there’s The Chase (USA). An adaptation of the popular British series of the same name that I’ve been struggling to dislike. Each episode consists of three contestants who work together to beat one of the resident Chasers (out of the three trivia experts) in rounds of general knowledge quizzing. The questions are hard and tricky but then again, Sara Hines’ presence (she hosts the show) makes it all less hard, I guess.

HOTTER:

The 2021 Golden Globes (USA) were reportedly a mess. I was so excited about the bi-coastal theme (or whatever that was) but after the show aired...most critics only had bad things to say.

Sorry, even hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s jokes were a fail in my books.

It must be corona. #DamnCorona

Speaking of critics, The 2021 Critics Choice Awards (USA, The CW) were actually not bad. Hosted by Taye Diggs, the show experienced a few technical glitches but still stood out because of the superior graphics. And Taye Diggs keeps getting better at hosting.

Other series to catch:
Riverdale (USA),
This Is Us (USA),
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (USA),
Shameless (USA, Showtime),
The Kelly Clarkson Show (USA),
WandaVision (USA, Disney+),
The Bachelor (USA),

WEB TV:

The 2021 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards (USA) were a well-produced web event that put podcasts on several maps.

The presentation was virtual but #totally engaging and one of the best I’ve watched this Enzer's World (E.W.Year.

Other series to catch:
KUNTERGRAU (Germany, YouTube).

A.I. UPDATE:

Idol
is killing it this season 19/4. That means that the audition rounds are so good so far. I have high hopes that the season will keep the momentum going forward and that the eventual winner will break and set records. #IdolIsBack #EnzerLovesIdol

E.W. GLOBAL:

The revived Lingo (UK) is a quiz/game show I always have time to watch and play along to. 3 groups of contestants are provided with single letter clues and then challenged to guess the correct hidden words that start with the given letter clue, in a matter of seconds. It’s a really fun game to play along to and the moderator/host is excellent.

Afternoon Express (South Africa, SABC 3), is a daytime magazine series that debuted in 2015. The show includes celebrity interview segments, cooking slots, wellness inserts, and a whole lot more, all in an hour. The loft in which the show is broadcast has to be the biggest draw-card, and the hosts are the definition of bubbly.

The Bachelorette (South Africa, M-Net) debuted with a likable lead and a host of gorgeous suitors (well maybe less than twenty guys), all for her to choose from. It’s a great prime-time show to tune into if you’re interested in watching a bunch of guys make fools of themselves for a girl they supposedly want to marry, or if you’re part of the Bachelor Nation.

Other series to catch:
Love Island (South Africa, M-Net),
The Chase (UK),
Tipping Point (UK),
MasterChef (UK, BBC One),
Gogglebox (UK, Channel 4),
Gogglebox (Australia, Lifestyle),
Teen First Dates (UK, E4),
Trending SA (South Africa, SABC 3),
Showcase (Turkey, TRT World),
The Bachelorette (New Zealand, TVNZ 2),
The Bachelor (Greece, Alpha TV),
The Bachelor (New Zealand, TVNZ 2),
Date My Family (South Africa, Mzansi Magic),
Little Mix The Search (UK, BBC One),
Family Feud (South Africa),
Dinner At Somizi’s (South Africa, 1 Magic),
Date My Family (Tanzania, Maisha Magic Bongo),
Lioness (South Africa, M-Net),
Carte Blanche (South Africa, M-Net),
Legacy (South Africa, M-Net),
Dancing on Ice (UK),

THROWBACK:

America Says
(USA) which premiered on the Game Show Network in 2018 is one game show I could binge watch all-day-long, on any day, at any time, and anywhere. The series features groups of teams that go head-to-head in a guessing game about American social norms. It’s hosted by a funny man and is (again) #totally binge-worthy.

IN THE NEWS

I came across a news article about a robber who stole a car from an unsuspecting woman but then later returned to the victim after realizing that she had left her baby in the car.

Yes, the robber dropped off the baby and then fled.

I just thought that was worth sharing.

FLICK PICK

Yep, aha, I did not miss the premiere of Wendy Williams: The Movie (USA, Lifetime) too.

The film pretty much summarizes Wendy Williams' life (which she always talks about anyway) and is fronted by Ciera Payton (Wendy) who I believe deserves to work on the sequel as well. Yea, there should be a part two, right?
