#TheRoundUp by Enzer - No. 83

HOT ON TV

Netflix (USA) has a new (noticeably promoted) hit show!

The Hunting Wives (USA) introduces us to a set of dominant Texans whose lives unexpectedly take a massive turn. Once again, proving that the facade remains, a facade.

Fronted by Brittany Snow (Sophie), Malin Akerman (Margo), and a host of (immeasurably) talented supporting actors, this edgy take on the Southern Housewife has reinvigorated viewing appetites. It’s no surprise the show has been renewed for a second season.

I mean, they had better not!

Will the series have a prolonged run on television?

I am not sure.

The plot is unpredictable, such that a one-season run was going to suffice. The writers did the novel, and unthinkable, making it really hard to comment on how the story may progress.

Out of all the shows I’ve covered on this blog (including our most dearest), this one takes the cake for most outrageous.

Can’t fault it, just gotta love it. #Totally

Also new on TV are Inside: USA (USA) and Building the Band (USA), both on Netflix.

Adapted from the British series of the same name, Inside: USA sequesters a group of famous people in a camera-filled dwelling to face off in fun-filled challenges for the chance to secure a lump sum of money.

Building the Band gathers a group of talented singers who are given the opportunity to essentially build their own band. By selecting other singers they think complement them best, the ‘organically’ formed bands then compete for a cash prize and a chance to be the next chart toppers.

They’re novel. They’re unthinkable. And we just gotta love ‘em too.

The new CBS (USA) daytime drama, Beyond The Gates (USA), could be an attempt to save the dying soap-opera genre.
A bold script from seasoned writer Michele Val Jean highlights lost narratives once staple to viewers circa 1980s to 1990s.
Those twists and tales associated with daytime dramas just got a refresh, and it seems to be working.
I just hope that it won’t get boring after about...two years on the air.
#Hopeful

Jane Lynch is back with Celebrity Weakest Link (USA), now on Fox USA.
And they kicked off the season with a Glee (USA, Fox USA) Homecoming episode!
Trivia games on TV: Will we ever get tired of playing along?

HOTTER:

HBO (USA) has decided to change the name of its main streamer, again!
To be frank, when the network switched from the title HBO Max to just Max (back in 2023), I didn’t favor the idea. However, the name, the brand, grew on me. It became part of the TV lexicon, etched in the makings of a successful streaming service.
Then BOOM!
Suddenly, it’s reported that Max will now be known as HBO Max (again) by the end of the American Summer of 2025.
Maybe the ‘new name’ will grow on me? Maybe HBO Max (USA) will become an even bigger success story. Maybe name changes are just a triviality.
We love HBO/HBO Max/Max, anyway.
Thanks for not causing too much confusion.

Moving on, how about we rename the whole industry to...SPLITSVILLE!
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company to HBO and its recently renamed streamer, HBO Max, is reportedly splitting its operations into two. Warner Bros. will consist of its streaming business and studios. Discovery Global will oversee the global networks, including CNN (USA) and Discovery (USA).

Similarly, NBCUniversal is also separating assets with core brands such as NBC (USA) and Peacock (USA) remaining under the NBCUniversal banner. Popular brands such as E! (USA) and MSNBC (USA) (which is set to be renamed) will form part of a new entity called VersantVersant is such a stand-out name, don't you think?

From the reports gathered, it’s not absolutely clear why the splits are necessary. However, the parent companies have cited debt concerns, lower ratings, and investor confidence as reasons for the splits. #TheSplits

On the contrary, Paramount Global and Skydance Media completed their merger this past August.
Much like the Disney-21st Century Fox acquisition/merger, this billion-dollar incorporation is expected to set the conglomerate at the fore of innovations in the TV Biz.

So..., I guess Netflix is the lone model to replicate nowadays.

One of the best television shows to ever grace our platforms, according to the people at Enzer’s World, E.W. (and viewing figures) is of course, You (USA, Netflix).
The series ended with an electrifying fifth season a few months ago, and I must say, I was dazzled to the core.
I still want more. I still want more of Joe (played by Penn Badgley) and his messiness, his associations, and all that ensues. I just want more. #Totally

*You won the following 13th E.W. Recognitions:
- Outstanding Series – Streaming (Fictional, TV)
- Outstanding Series – Thriller (Fictional, TV)

*Three actors from the show won 13th E.W. Recognitions:
- Penn Badgley (Joe) for Outstanding Portrayal – Actor, Streaming (Fictional, TV)
- Frankie DeMaio (Henry) for Outstanding Portrayal – Younger (Fictional, TV)
- Penn Badgley (Joe) for E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Fictional Series Portrayal – Actor (TV)
- Madeline Brewer (Bronte, Louise) for E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Fictional Series Portrayal – Actress (TV).

If you’re still out of the loop, the hit show, You will not be back for a new season. The show has found tremendous success on E.W.; it would be remiss not to give it a parting mention on this edition of #TheRoundUp by Enzer.

Out of twenty-two nominations to date, the series has won nine E.W. Recognitions, including:
- 7th E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Series (Fictional, TV)
- 8th E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Series (Fictional, TV)
- 9th E.W. Recognition for Favorite Off-The-Air Fictional Series (TV)
- 10th E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Series (Fictional, TV)

- 11th E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Series – U.S. Production (Fictional, TV)

A.I. UPDATE:

The 23rd Season of E.W. favorite, American Idol (USA, ABC USA) was won by Jamal Roberts.
The crooner crooned his way to the top, making this past season of Idol a memorable one, for sure.

New judge Carrie Underwood did really well for a first-timer. She has this calming effect that rounded out the panel well. The other judges were great to watch, too.

The themed episodes seemed well-produced. I liked the variety and the music. The addition of Jelly Roll and others as mentors was such a great idea.

The crop of contestants was one of the best ever. They had some really good singers in that pack. Another plus was that the contestants were not just good singers, they had personality too – the X-FACTOR.

Ryan Seacrest is always a pleasure to watch. He is one of the best hosts there is.

Hopefully, the producers will keep the momentum.

E.W. STEAM:

Does Cruel Intentions (USA, Amazon Prime Video) deserve a one-season run?

This revival of the cult-classic, Cruel Intentions, was such a treat. I felt like a happy dog on a good day when that recommendation popped up on my tab.

Similar to the 2000s original, the show follows a group of college students who get caught up in their school's Greek system, leading to scandal, after scandal, after scandal – oh, a treat indeed.

Fronted by one of E.W.’s Top Actresses of the year, Sarah Catherine Hook (Caroline), and an impressive line-up of young and good-looking actors, this provocative show is the clear reason streaming services exist.
I thought that streaming services were for shows that don’t pull in as many ratings on Network TV, but appeal to niche demographics. I really did!
C’mon, guys, bring the show back. And stop neglecting niche demos.

Also, Grosse Pointe Garden Society (USA, NBC) got cancelled after one season, too, and could have moved to Peacock, or something.

*Cruel Intentions won two 13th E.W. Recognitions:
- Outstanding Series – Drama, U.S. Production, Streaming (Fictional, TV)
- E.W. Steam’s Outstanding Fictional Series – Drama (TV).

*Sarah Catherine Hook won for Outstanding Portrayal – Actress, Streaming (Fictional, TV)

*Grosse Pointe Garden Society’s sole win was for Outstanding Cast – U.S. Production, Network (Fictional, TV).

Luckily, Overcompensating (USA, Amazon Prime Video) still has life.
Renewed for a second season, this show is about another set of quirky college students who bring us along on a ride of their college lives.
Infused with a ton of humor and dramatic scenes, this new series, like the one mentioned above, will keep you wanting more and more.

*Overcompensating won E.W. Steam’s 13th E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Fictional Series – Dramedy (TV).
*Lead, Benito Skinner (Benny) won for E.W. Queer’s Outstanding Fictional Series Portrayal – Actor, Streaming (TV).

#TotallySteam

E.W. QUEER:

This one makes me a little uncomfortable.
Part of the American Story (USA) franchise, American Sports Story (USA, FX) tells the sad story of former NFL player, Aaron Hernandez (played by Josh Andres Rivera).
Don’t get me wrong: it’s a well-produced show, with an incredible cast, among other outstanding aspects.
But by the end of the last episode, it seemed as if Aaron’s detriment, supposedly contributed to by his sexual inclinations, was a result of his weak mental state (due to a rare brain condition).
That’s the implication from this.
Though there has been (public) mention of Aaron suffering multiple concussions, and how that negatively affects athletes’ well-being, that correlation is blurred by the fact that not that many NFL athletes have suffered such a fate as Aaron’s.

*American Sports Story won three 13th E.W. Recognitions:
- Outstanding Series – Network (Fictional, TV)
- Outstanding Music – U.S. Production, Network (Fictional, TV)
- Outstanding Series – Drama, U.S. Production, Network (Fictional, TV)

*Josh Andres Rivera won two 13th E.W. Recognitions:
- Outstanding Portrayal – Actor, Network (Fictional, TV)
- E.W. Queer’s Outstanding Fictional Series Portrayal – Actor, Network (TV).

On a lighter note, English Teacher (USA, FX) brings Evan (played by Brian Jordan Alvarez, who also co-writes the series) to life in quite a humorous way (of course).
I expected this one to receive some kind of mention during this year’s Emmys season, but...maybe next year.

*English Teacher won two 13th E.W. Recognitions:
- Outstanding Series – Comedy, U.S. Production, Network (Fictional, TV)
- E.W. Queer’s Outstanding Fictional Series (TV).

*Lead, Brian Jordan Alvarez won for Outstanding Fictional Series Portrayal – Actor, Network (TV).

House of Guinness (UK) is a new Netflix drama about members of the Guinness Empire, primarily the events following their patriarch’s death in Dublin, Ireland.
It’s an exceptional production.

E.W. CHRISTIAN:

E.W. Christian’s Outstanding Show (TV) for the 13th E.W. Year is Amazon Prime Video’s hit series House of David (USA)!
Showcasing the rise of the biblical David (played by Michael Iskander, E.W. Christian’s Outstanding Fictional Series Portrayal (TV) winner for the 13th E.W. Year), the series is such a mesmerizing production, with cinematic aesthetics that consume viewers’ attention in the most unbelievable manner.
I’m in awe!

#TotallyChristian

THROWBACK:

Mistresses (USA) premiered in 2013 and lasted for four seasons on the ABC Network (USA).

Though the series was an adaptation, they (production) killed it. It’s as simple as that.

And though the departure of Alyssa Milano (Savi) after the end of season three may have cost the show a fifth season renewal, I wouldn’t change a thing about the series regardless.

*Out of thirteen nominations, Mistresses won six E.W. Recognitions throughout its run:
- 2nd E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Fictional Series – Drama (TV)
- 2nd E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Cast – Drama (Fictional, TV)
- 2nd E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Cast – Mystery/Thriller/Suspense (Fictional, TV)
- 3rd E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Series (TV)
- 3rd E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Fictional Series (TV)
- 3rd E.W. Recognition for Outstanding Series – USA (TV).

DAILY INSPIRATION

What is opportunity, and when does it knock?
It never knocks.
You can wait a whole lifetime, listening, hoping, and you will hear no knocking, none at all.
You are opportunity. You must knock on the door leading to your destiny. You must prepare yourself to recognize it; to pursue and seize it as you develop the strength of your personality, and build a self-image with which you can exist – with your self-respect alive and growing.

“The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few, is to be found in the industry, application, and perseverance under the prompting of a brave, determined spirit.” - MARK TWAIN

FLICK PICK

Looks like we’ve entered the return of THE CULT CLASSIC ERA!

I Know What You Did Last Summer (USA, Australia, Canada, Syndicated) made its cinematic return this year, and we are not complaining at all.

The movie is well-paced and contains the right pinch of horrific scenes.

It’s a horror, yes, but a well-balanced horror.

Again, novel and unthinkable.
