#TheRoundUp by Enzer - No. 82

HOT ON TV

Harlem
(USA).

This Amazon Prime Video (USA) original follows a group of four friends navigating adulthood in the Big Apple, with Meagan Good (Camille) playing the central role (seems so).

It's a well-written series with very little to criticize.

It’s well-balanced in many respects, such that the third and final season is set to conclude the story arc remarkably.

Yep, the production team is that good.

The third season specifically, deserves some spotlight.

#Totally

Now, moving on to things involving gyrations, sways, twirls, and the like, Dancing with the Stars (USA, Syndicated) is not only a fan favorite but continues to mesmerize audiences season after season (shhh...don’t tell your mother).

The U.S. version is probably one of the longest-running family-friendly reality series on a major network and I #totally get why that is so.

The production standard is noteworthy (especially the just-ended season).

And even though they’ve been changing hosts quite frequently, the pair-ups between professional ballroom dancers and celebrities are just genius.

The show has also been impressively delivering cover versions of hit songs!

Thank goodness somebody adapted the format from Britain’s Strictly Come Dancing (UK, Syndicated).

*Dancing with the Stars USA won two 12th E.W. Recognitions in Music:

- E.W. Xtra’s Best Act – Covers
- E.W. Xtra’s Best Act

HOTTER:

NBC Universal
, the owners of popular American brands such as USA Network, Syfy, Bravo, E!, Telemundo, and CNBC, as well as flagships Peacock and NBC (to mention a few), is reportedly planning to split the business into two or more entities.

One group will comprise NBC and other key brands, mainly the more ‘profitable' ones. The other group (or groups) will consist of the likes of MSNBC, which is reportedly becoming increasingly risky to hold.

I sincerely hope that NBC Universal is not trying to salvage what’s left of their ‘less profitable brands’.

However, if the split will open up more opportunities for fresher ideas that could ultimately make them more appealing to investors, then I’m in (too).

Yeah, I think that’s what’s going on over there.

The Chucky sequel (simply) titled Chucky (USA, Syndicated) will not be returning for another season!

The revival was one show I found distinct. Pulling off HORROR on the small screen is quite a feat, but the producers of Chucky defeated the odds on that one. I give credit for that.

Hopefully, they’ll be contemplating another re-imagining soon.

*Chucky has been nominated for a total, ten E.W. Recognitions, winning the Outstanding Series – Horror Recognition in Television during the 10th E.W. Recognitions Period, 2022

WEB TV:

The Game Awards 2024
are undoubtedly HOT ON TV!

Even past ceremonies are worth the watch!

And even though (actually) playing the video games nominated for awards might be way more fun, the producers do a great job at keeping viewers glued to their screens for almost three hours max. #WellDone

A.I. UPDATE:

The 23rd Season of American Idol (USA, ABC USA) featuring new judge Carrie Underwood, will premiere soon.

About last season…
Abi Carter was a great pick.

It sorta became apparent that she might win towards the end of the season. Her song choices improved, and her performances made her shine. I also noticed that the judges would at times pass on judging (more like complimenting) her performances. That was odd.

But I am happy she won. Her winning single sounds good too.

E.W. STEAM:

We are also watching Reasonable Doubt (USA, Hulu), Nobody Wants This (USA, Netflix), and Laid (USA, Peacock).
Reasonable Doubt follows a legal practitioner whose life is rocked by her estranged husband, amidst all the courtroom challenges she continuously attempts to overcome. #GoodShow

Nobody Wants This is for the die-hard romantics. This rom-com defines rom-com in so many ways. #GreatLeads

Laid is about a woman whose ex-boyfriends mysteriously die in the order she beds them. #Haha

In my head, I’m thinking: WHO THOUGHT OF THIS AGAIN?

The Sex Lives of College Girls (USA) recently concluded its third season run on Max (USA).

The writers never cease to captivate audiences.

The latest season, which swiftly transitioned from the Renee Rapp (Leighton) departure proves that.

Has she become too big for the series? Or too busy?

Either way, my fingers are crossed for another season. #PleasePleasePlease

Another heartfelt departure is Elite (Spain, Netflix) which concluded with its eighth season.

I still can’t believe they shut down Las Encinas! I honestly think the writers could’ve come up with a different ending. I, for sure did not want to watch that specific group of Las Encinas Seniors closing the series. #NoOffense

E.W. QUEER:

Who isn’t a fan of the Drag Race franchise?

RuPaul’s Drag Race (USA, MTV USA) debuted in 2009 and became a global phenomenon shortly after. It provides a unique insight into the Drag Queen Culture and has stayed true to representing a part of society that could be regarded as taboo.

And boy do we love ‘em all:
- RuPaul’s Drag Race;
- RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked (USA, MTV USA);
- RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (USA, Paramount+);
- RuPaul’s Drag Race (USA, UK, Syndicated);
- Drag Race Espana (USA, Spain, WOW Presents Plus, ATRESPlayer Premium);

E.W. GLOBAL:

As much as I am a fan of the U.S. version of Dancing with the Stars, fortunately, my viewing time is also split between the Australian and French versions of the franchise.

Dancing with the Stars on Channel 7 (Australia) has been running for more than 20 seasons and counting. One of its defining aspects is the notable cast member and host, Sonia Kruger, who hosts almost all Australian versions of reality shows.

Danse avec les Stars on TF1 (France) is equally good. The show is set to premiere its 14th season soon, presenting a French take on an acclaimed television franchise.

THROWBACK:

I am a huge fan of the summer TV schedule staple Big Brother (USA, CBS).

Yes, I could watch a year-long season without distraction.

Oh how I wish CBS would revive a filler season during the Fall-Winter Period.

Maybe a Celebrity Big Brother (USA, CBS) comeback?
The Celebrity version of CBSBig Brother premiered in 2018 and  aired for only three seasons, with the last one concluding in the American Winter of 2022.

For me, it wasn’t much about the celebrity cast, but that we had episodes of Big Brother all year long if you count the recently canceled Canadian Version too.

Therefore, this is perhaps less of a THROWBACK to reminisce on, than a plea for the return of a show that clearly has that mojo.

DAILY INSPIRATION

1. David Grayson uses the following parable to illustrate an extraordinary message:
‘Imagine a bird soaring high above, feeling one kind of freedom. To experience life fully, it must land and go through the arduous task of building a nest.

Through this discipline comes another kind of freedom, to experience the depths of life.

How have you felt free, and how have you felt trapped?

Can you apply discipline in your life to explore the depths, and in those depths, to find another kind of freedom?

Adventure is not outside; it is within.’

2. Dr Maxwell Maltz is quoted saying:

‘Who among us, with our marvelous 20-20 vision called hindsight, cannot compile a lengthy list of missed opportunities?

Did you miss them because they were unrecognizable to you at the time?

On the other hand, did you know they were there but felt that you had neither the ability nor the strength to deal with them?’

3. George Elliott wrote:

‘The golden moments in the stream of life rush past us, and we see nothing but sand; the angels come to visit us, and we only know them when they are gone.’

One of my personal dance/house music faves, Miss Becky Hill has been unstoppable since she first HIT pop radio in the UK and playlists across the globe.

IN THE NEWS

- The Gods in charge of Natural Disasters have descended their regular rounds of vengeance on the Americas once again. First, it was the hurricanes, then came the snow storms, all topped by the devastating California wildfires. Anything else I missed?

- Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel forces are closer than ever to some ceasefire agreements. That’s better than nothing.

- Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau is reportedly resigning! Wait, isn’t Canada a democracy?

- There’s been a vast increase in the number of air accidents. That’s highly concerning. Not all airplanes involved are Boeing planes, though.

*CBS Evening News (USA, CBS) is the 12th E.W. Recognitions' Outstanding Series - News.

FLICK PICK

The movie, Trap (USA, Canada, Syndicated) is highly recommended.

This psychological thriller starring Josh Hartnett (Cooper), Ariel Donoghue (Riley), and Saleka Night Shyamalan (Lady Raven) is about a dad who escorts his teenage daughter to a pop star’s concert, only to later find out that the whole show is an FBI, TRAP.

#BestCinematicExperienceEver

The latest version of the musical Wicked (USA, Canada, Iceland, Japan, UK, Syndicated) is one long musical, I tell ya.

The amount of musical performances surpassed one’s expectations for music in a musical.

The story is about the origins of the Wicked Witch of Oz and features a stellar cast, sets, and as mentioned original musical numbers.

A Family Affair (USA, Netflix) stars Zac Efron (Chris) as a pop star who falls for his assistant’s mother. It’s a well-written comedy with arguably some of the best performances of the year. The movie also stars Nicole Kidman (Brooke) and Joey King (Zara).

The Groomsmen Trilogy of movies (Last Dance (USA, Canada); Second Chances (USA); First Look (USA)) all on Hallmark+ (USA) follow a group of friends’ journey to the aisle. It's a typical Hallmark movie that deserves your time.

Other movies to watch:
- Night***** (USA, Syndicated)
- One of Them Days (USA, Syndicated)
- Back in Action (USA, Netflix)
- Queer (USA, Italy, Syndicated)
- Everybody Loves Jenifa (Ghana, Nigeria, Syndicated)
