#TheRoundUp By Enzer - No. 75

 HOT ON TV

The First Lady (USA, Showtime), a drama that places three former American First Ladies’ life stories at the forefront, is (actually) living up to its billing.

In this series, three former First Ladies, from three different eras in American History, are portrayed by some of Hollywood's most celebrated television actresses: Viola Davis as Michelle Obama; Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt; Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford.

And not only that, the production itself is unexpectedly captivating.

Yea, you’d expect a bore-fest from a historical/period drama like this one, but...no. The producers succeeded at presenting a show which is less of a documentary and more of a hit show fit for a network like Showtime, and (must I add) deserving of multiple Emmy nods.

Another plus, well, Showtime is known for airing the edgier types of series, but thankfully that side took a backseat because honestly, who would want to imagine what goes down between the Presidents and their wives ''behind closed doors.''

Hey, this is Hollywood’s Showtime Network we’re talking about here.

I do not expect a second season. Unless a different set of former first ladies are the subject, the show can remain a single-season series.

RANDOM SIDE-NOTE: The husband to the Prime Minister of Australia is nicknamed THE FIRST BLOKE, lolz.

Continuing with the convo on the raunchier side of television, All The Queen’s Men (USA, BET Plus) is a new series one found to be truly distinct.

The series follows a successful strip club owner, Marilyn played by Eva MarcilleNot only is the revered club owner raking in the ‘benjamins’, but she also has a loyal employee force that would even risk their lives for the ‘madam.’

All the drama makes the show less of a raunchy pastime/BET’s very own Magic Mike fiesta and more of a notable stream-worthy show. #ILikeIt

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (USA, Netflix): excuse the unnecessarily long series title.

Because the show is a thrill to watch!

Well, it’s not the best of the best thrillers. But it is one to choose if recommended.

#TotallyRecommended

The Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem (USA, Peacock) series is not bad.

Although the soap-opera genre may be decaying (that's according to me by the way), this Peacock release is a (surprisingly) great draw-in/marketing tool. It’s astounding how some of Days’ iconic characters are still conversation starters, fifty-seven years after the show debuted on television.

*NBC’s Days of Our Lives (USA, Syndicated) is Enzer’s World (E.W.)’s Outstanding Soap-Opera for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021.

The Kardashians are back on TV, trying to replicate their E! Network (USA) success on Hulu (USA). Only time will tell if Kris Jenner and company will succeed once more.

NBC’s American Song Contest (USA, Syndicated) is so cool! Based on the Eurovision Song Contest (Syndicated) last held in the Netherlands, the show pits contestants from all U.S. states and territories in a battle to find America’s favorite song as performed and written by the contestants. A couple of well-known singers including SisqoJewel, and Michael Bolton are also participants. It’s a great family show, for sure!

*Eurovision Song Contest is the 9th E.W. Recognitions’ Outstanding Reality Series – Singing.

HOTTER:

Who knows if ABC’s Queens (USA, Syndicated) will get a second season?

The show’s last episode of the first season didn’t leave much to be excited about so…, so it's all up in the air.

CBS’ The Grammys (USA, Syndicated) aired live from Las Vegas and were once again hosted by comedian, Trevor Noah

The glitzy affair was not a disappointment, the producers upped their game! Hopefully, the next ceremony will be even better.

*CBS’ The Grammys is the 9th E.W. Recognitions’ Outstanding Televised Event – Awards.

Nickelodeon’s The Kids’ Choice Awards 2022 (USA, Syndicated), BET’s The NAACP Image Awards 2022 (USA, Syndicated), The Film BAFTAs 2022 (UK, BBC One) and ABC’s The Oscars 2022 (USA, Syndicated) are other televised events to check out.

The second season of HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant (USA, Syndicated) is now streaming!

I had my doubts, but those doubts are slowly getting squashed.

Way to go Steve Yockey!

James Corden has signed on for one more season of CBS’ The Late Late Show (USA, Syndicated). The funnyman is leaving the show after eight years as host. I have no idea who could replace him. Do you?

*CBS’ The Late Late Show is the 9th E.W. Recognitions’ Outstanding Reality Series – Talk/Chat.

Ellen is also retiring! Well, that did not send much of a shock-wave considering that a lot of the backstage drama had been publicly exposed months before the announcement of The Ellen DeGeneres Show (USA, Syndicated) cancellation.

Anyways, the feel-good show that has been on the air for nineteen seasons will air its last episodes this May. I can’t say I won't miss daytime TV with Ellen, so #HalfSadFace, I guess.

*Ellen DeGeneres is E.W. Queer’s Top Celeb on TV for the 9th E.W. Year, 2021

A.I. UPDATE:

The 20th Season of ABC’s American Idol (USA, Syndicated) is sorta living up to the hype, hey.

Where do I even begin?

The contestants this year are amazing. They all perform like pros, live show after live show.

However, I do have a few favorites:-

Nicolina who I believe is beyond talented. She should win, even though she’s from Canada, lol.

HunterGirl has that x-factor. I think she’s marketable and that a lot of record labels or key people will be interested in working with her.

Fritz seems like a great personality and winning could be his American Dream Come True.

Christian is just lovable. Every time he performs I pay attention. I’m attentive. That could work in his favor.

Jay and Mike (who was eliminated recently) are probably the two most good-looking people contesting. Umm, there you go.

Those six stand out for me. Hopefully one of those six wins it all.

What about the production?

The producers succeeded at incorporating the 20th Anniversary theme without overshadowing the contestants (and even the judges). It's not too much of this or that, it's just balanced.

Oh, one more thing: I feel like it might be time to refresh the judging panel. *hides*

Don't get me wrong, I like the current trio (Luke BryanKaty PerryLionel Ritchie) but it kinda seems like they are losing that excitement, that vigor, the purpose they initially exuded. I don’t know, maybe it's just me.

Because I mean, if you take a look at the finalists they picked for Season 20, you’d punch me in the face for suggesting a refresh.

THROWBACK:

FOX’s Glee (USA, Syndicated): a Ryan Murphy staple that up to this day, has provided the only television soundtrack I listen to regularly, has to be one of television's GOATs.

This musical series revolves around a group of quirky high schoolers and their journey to finding their adulthood purpose, all beginning at their High School’s Glee Club sessions.

Forget all the negative media publicity; just sit back, relax and binge on what was once a hit television series about ordinary McKinley High Students and Staff.

DAILY INSPIRATION

“Lives of great men all remind us we can make our lives sublime. And departing, leave behind us footprints in the sands of time.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous words are as meaningful now as when they were originally written.

Nelson Mandela is quoted as follows:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves: ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not service the world.

There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It’s not just in some of us – it’s in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

SPEAK OUT

#Quotes:

“No man or woman of the humblest sort can really be strong, gentle and good, without the world being better for it, without somebody being helped and comforted by the very existence of that goodness.” – PHILLIPS BROOKS

“Let us then be up and doing with a heart for any fate. Still achieving, still pursuing...to labor and to wait.” - HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

“He who cherishes a beautiful vision, a lofty ideal in his heart, will one day realize it. Dream lofty dreams and as you dream so shall you become...” - JAMES ALLEN

“Nothing is as real as a dream. The world can change around you, but your dream will not. Responsibilities need not erase it. Duties need not obscure it. Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away.” - TOM CLANCY

“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” - ALBERT EINSTEIN

“A childlike man is not a man whose development has been arrested. On the contrary, he is a man who has given himself a chance of continuing to develop long after most adults have muffled themselves in the cocoon of middle-aged habit and convention.” - ALDOUS HUXLEY

“Life is no brief candle to me. It is sort of a splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” - GEORGE BERNARD SHAW

“I slept and dreamed that life was joy. I woke and saw that life was but service. I served and understood that service was joy.” - RABINDRANATH TAGORE

“Invariably when asked the source of their knowledge and power, the truly powerful will reply: It is not my power. What little power I have is but a minute expression of a far greater power. I am merely a conduit. It is not my power at all.” - M. SCOTT PECK

“Nothing great has ever been achieved except by those who dare believed something inside them was superior to circumstances.” - BRUCE BARTON

MUSIC SPOT

That signature look of hers, coupled with her mad singing skills and showbiz appeal made Jessie J the IT GIRL of the 2010s.

She made inspirational pop cool and mainstream. Though her art later matured into a more soulful/RnB sound, her initial image will always be her defining moment in music; because it DID set her apart from the pack.

Did I mention how impressive her vocal ability is? #JadoreJessieJ

FLICK PICK

I am a huge fan of the Scream (USA, Syndicated) Series.

I think I have watched all of the movies (that’s the first one and all sequels) and the television adaptations. So, I’m definitely on my way to becoming Scream’s ultimate fan, lol.

The release of the latest movie in the franchise (titled Scream), was unexpected. Yea, I must have been living under a rock.

But I was glad that somebody thought of reviving the series ten years after the release of the last sequel - now that’s just great timing.

Speaking of great timing, a new movie in the Horror genre circles simply titled (USA, Canada, Syndicated) is buzz-worthy these days.

The story is about the cast and crew of an adult movie that decide to shoot in a remote location. Little do they know, that the landlords of the place they’ve rented are creepy/horny oldies craving bloodshed.

Lord, I was even more of a horror movie fanatic after watching that!

A prequel is currently in the works, so catch up fast. #Totally

Happiness Ever After (South Africa, Netflix) is a movie about a trio of girlfriends that are spiritedly searching for true love (or at least the right formula).

All that is well ends well because each of the ladies does end up finding satisfactory answers, just like in every other rom-com.

A Naija Christmas (Nigeria, Netflix) is a comedy about a set of siblings that are challenged to settle down before Christmas Day so that their dearest mother finds peace and recovers well after she’s hospitalized.

If that is not a good enough reason for you to give the movie a chance, I don't know what is.

IN THE NEWS

And now for the depressing part (of life)...

The Russo-Ukrainian War has turned the world upside down.

Just when many thought that the success in mitigating the effects of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak was the beginning of better days, the Russian Government decided to take diplomatic matters into their own hands by attacking neighboring Ukraine.

The issue I have with such conflicts is that innocent civilians are affected first, if not always. As much as war (i.e. World War 3) may be the only plausible solution, the impact is debilitating to society (hence the sanctions).

Call me naive...
